There has been 40 years since the release of this amazing movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis. Zemeckis himself told once that his idea for Back to the Future came to him when looking at his father's yearbook and wondering what would have happened if he had gone to school with him, would they have been friends? This movie takes this concept and makes it into one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, a movie about family and time travel.

Marty is a normal teenager. He goes to high school and has a girlfriend named Jennifer. His parents might appear, at first sight, as dorks. His mother, Lorraine, seems unhappy with her life, always drinking vodka and having nostalgia over, what she considers to be. the good old days of the 1950's, when she and Marty's father, George, met; also, she criticizes Marty's girlfriend for her moral values, not understanding girls who chase boys, saying she wouldn't have been capable of doing something remotely similar when she was younger. His father also seems unhappy, with a 9-5 job that consumes his life and an abusive boss, Biff; adding to that, he is not very interested in his wife anymore, he doesn't pay attention to her and the spark in their love is fading. Marty can't relate to their way of living. He thinks of his parents as adults, who can't comprehend him as a teenager, he can't imagine them as being that, being his age, coping with his struggles. But this will change very soon.

The crazy scientist

Marty has a friend, the Doc Brown, who has been working on the project of his life: a time travel machine in the form of a DeLorean (Who wouldn't want to time travel with style?) The Doc uses hid dog, Einstein, to prove the effectiveness of the machine and shows Marty how it works; it works using plutonium, which the Doc has stolen. He tells Marty that he's going to time travel to the future and come back, when the guys, whom the Doc stole the plutonium from, appear and shoot the Doc, forcing Marty to escape quickly using the DeLorean and ending up in the year 1955.

Marty cannot believe his eyes. The year 1955 is so much different from 1985, so much so that his first encounter with real people is when a family believes he is an alien coming from space because of the DeLorean's futuristic style and his Marty's protective clothing for radiation.

He explores town to try and contact the Doc so that he can return to his present as fast as possible. When looking at the telephone directories, he sees his dad. There he is his dad as a teenager. Marty's sees Biff, his dad's future boss, enter the cafeteria; he sees how Biff hasn't changed a lot from his 1955 self, he has been George's bully for more than 30 years. His father is almost the same, shy and afraid to speak for himself, with a nerdy personality.

The year 1955

He follows his father and sees him climbing up a tree to spy on a girl's bedroom window. His father falls down and almost gets hit by a car, when Marty pushes him away and gets hit instead.

He wakes up with the sound of a voice, thinking that the whole-time trave thing was just a dream, but he realizes he's still in the year 1955 when he sees his mother, Lorraine. There she is his mother, also as a teenager, and Marty is amazed with how good her looks are. But there is a big problem, that was the moment his parents were supposed to meet for the first time, that he interrupted. So now, Lorraine is interested in his son instead of George.

Marty asks Lorraine's parents about the Doc's address before Lorraine tries to flirt with him. He leaves the house to find the Doc and return home. When he finds his house, the Doc doesn't believe in Marty until he tells him about the functionality and creative process of the making of the time travel machine, which proves that he is telling the truth. The issue is there is no way they can find plutonium in the year 1955; the only way to get enough energy for the DeLorean is to wait until the night of the lightning, the one that will hit the clock tower, and use that energy to return Marty back to 1985. But, first, Marty needs to get his parents reunited before he and his sibling cease to exist in that timeline. This is the moment where Marty will start relating to his parents, especially George, more than he ever thought he would.

My mom has got the hots for me?

George is a guy who's constantly bullied, with and extremely low self-esteem. So, Marty needs to help him put his pants on and ask Lorraine to the dance, the Enchantment under the sea.

A thing that is similar between Marty and his father is that they both have the fear of making a mistake. George is afraid of Lorraine not accepting him and afraid of showing people the sci-fi stories that he writes as a hobby. Marty is afraid of showing his music to the world because of the rejection he has received. They both have a failure fear that they can relate to.

In the case of Lorraine, she is also to teenager Marty's world. She seeks Marty's attention, doing just the thing her older self said she never would have done. She, in fact, was a teenager too, interested in boy's attention, which isn't wrong at all.

The problem that needs to be solved is Lorraine being interested in Marty's alter ego, Calvin Klein, because of his personality; she wants someone brave and capable of standing up to protect her, something that George is not, yet...

George doesn't want to keep trying and ask Lorraine to the dance, so Marty grabs his protective suit and pretends to be an alien, named Darth Vader, that threatens George about eating his brain if he doesn't ask Lorraine to the dance. Marty's mission is still going.

The Enchantment under the sea

Despite his efforts, Lorraine is not interested in talking with George, so Marty gives some advice to him. There needs to happen something bigger. Marty is going with Lorraine to the dance and will try to touch her without her permission so that George can interrupt them and end up as the savior. The night of the lightning and the dance is coming.

The night arrives and Marty is scared of leaving because he knows that the Doc will die in a shooting in the future. He tries to warn him, but the Doc is reluctant to know about the future. Marty plans to leave a secret note for the Doc to read in 1985 and save himself.

The dance, the Enchantment under the sea, begins and George is prepared, When Marty and Lorraine are in the car, Marty tries to bother her, but she seems very relaxed, she has no problem with them having sex, she is drinking and smoking, and Marty is shocked. His mother is the exact opposite as he has thought she would be. Marty starts acting like a father figure to Lorraine, not wanting her to smoke and drink, and catching a glimpse of what parents go through when raising their children.

Earth Angel

Lorraine kisses Marty but stops, suddenly, getting the feeling that there is something wrong, like she was kissing her brother (geez...). Instead of being interrupted by George, Biff appears out of nowhere and tries to take advantage of Lorraine. And, when George arrives to the scene, he has to face Biff, not Marty. Finally, George takes the courage and beats the hell out of Biff, leaving Lorraine really impressed. Now, Lorraine and George can go to the dance together. But there is no happy ending yet. They need to kiss for them to fall in love and for the timeline to be saved.

Marty starts playing the guitar at the dance so that the music can continue and his parents can kiss, when he notices he begins to disappear from that timeline. The plan needs a quick resolution!

George decides to kiss Lorraine. The timeline and Marty are saved (the scene is even more magical with "Earth Angel" playing in the background). Now, the only thing missing is Marty coming back to 1985.

A new present

While playing at the dance, Marty is brave enough to rock some tunes and show the people what he is capable of. We get the sense that Mary and George are letting that fear of failure behind them.

Marty says goodbye to his parents. He is leaving for good, with another point of view of them. They weren't always adults, the had high hopes, dreams, fears and they went through the same stuff he is dealing at that moment of his life. He's not as different from them.

"Marty, will we ever see you again?" "I guarantee it"

Marty goes to the clock tower. Before leaving, the Doc finds out about the letter of warning and destroys it, not wanting to make a mess with the future. Marty almost doesn't make the trip; however, they manage to send Martu to the year 1985.

Coming back, Marty finds a new world, a new family. Firstly, he finds out that the Doc really didn't destroy the letter completely and, before the shooting, he put on a bulletproof vest to protect himself. The Doc Brown is alive!

Secondly, Marty goes to his house. In the morning, he wakes up, finding a new home. His house is bigger, cleaner and more organized. His siblings are wearing more formal clothing, his sister has a more liberated sexual life, and they both have steady jobs. His parents are happier than ever, thriving with love. His family is now richer, happier, more confident with themselves and living their best life. All of this because of Marty and wanting to face their biggest fears. Even Biff has a much more different lifestyle; he's not George's bully anymore, he's his employee (because George made the great decision of publishing his novels, doing what he always wanted to.

Now, everything seems perfect for Marty...Is it not?

The Doc arrives from the future, telling Marty they need to go to the future because there ir a problem with his children. Marty needs to go in another time adventure. What will happen then?

"Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads"
